Beautiful article!! At 77 years I found an old picture and on the back my mother had written wrong date for my DOB!! Or maybe not?? I don’t care. I’m 40 years old in my mind, 80 in my body most days and very old in my soul. That’s what I think matters. Love this writing. You’ve got it !!!! Doc.
Thank you so much! And that's an interesting way of putting it — love the different ages you assign to mind, body, and soul. Thanks for your perspective!
All great points. We are nowhere near accepting the natural superficial (cosmetic) aging process in women. Aging is still seen largely as a loss of beauty to be mourned, corrected or shunned. I find the physical infirmities of aging to be much harder to manage! I looked up the older models you cited; Benedetta Barzini is a fascinating woman with many opinions on this same topic and others, see https://www.interviewmagazine.com/film/benedetta-barzini-the-disappearance-of-my-mother-beniamino-barrese
Thanks for sharing, I hadn't seen that! And thanks for reading! You're so right — what's truly hard about aging is the physical infirmities, and yet we focus so much on looks. We still have such a long way to go.
I’m so glad I found this! I have been searching for articles on aging and being an older women for the English conversation class I hold every week here where I live (Swedish speaking Finland) for a group of women aged 60-83. They’re all wonderful examples of how one can age well and in different ways. I’m always looking for good writing and interesting topics. So yay! Thank you 🤩
If you like her, you should check it out sometime. Plus it's just a phenomenal movie. I remember sitting in the theater with my friend Paul and about the 15 minute mark, we turned to each other and said, "Movie of the year."

As always, beautifully written and resonant.
Thank you so much, Nancy!!

Isabella Rossellini is in one of my favorite movies of all time, “Fearless.” She played Jeff Bridges’ wife. Amazing.
Another movie I haven't seen! I'll have to check it out. I loved "Blue Velvet" when it came out and saw it multiple times.

Thanks so much! That's a good point — we now see models of all sizes. That wasn't reflected so much in "And Just Like That," but it's a general trend!
