Amazon is hard to ignore! My husband and I try very very diligently to avoid it but still watch a few shows (Peripheral, The Expanse --best space show EVER, Vikings) and there is like one or two items that we had been getting on Amazon before we "boycotted" it that we literally can NOT find anywhere else. It's such a shame but we work hard to otherwise shop locally, avoid WholeFoods if we can (sometimes we can't but be careful with their produce as they use Apeel on their products) and we actively try to avoid big chain stores. I think that if you're making an effort, it's better than most! I know people who literally just say, "oh I can't stop ordering on Amazon" but have no reason as to why.
JB is literally the scum of the Earth and I hate that he is buying everything, inflating prices, and monopolizing life. I could go on but I'll stop there. LOL
Wow, I didn't know about Apeel and had to look it up to find out what it was! Yikes. It's so hard to avoid all of this.
I don't make as much of an effort as some people I know. It's so much work. But it's good to keep trying and stepping up our efforts. And it's also key for our politicians to pass laws that curb the bad behavior on the part of companies like this, and for our regulators to enforce the laws we do have.
I don't think that anyone should be allowed to be a billionaire. Even if they do good things with their money, why should the good that's done in the world be at the whim of a few billionaires? And we've seen that most of them, like Bezos and Musk, are detrimental to our world and do more bad than good.
I don't hate billionaires. The American people are the problem. Americans fall for anything. All of these ads to impulse buy. And people are also fooled by credit card companies.
I don’t think there’s any reason for anyone to have that much money. That aside, if the American people fall for anything that may be related to our poor educational system. Maybe it’s time we look at our systems and not blame people for being subject to PR, which uses psychology to achieve its ends.
Funny, I just ordered something from Amazon today. I do most of my shopping in stores, but certain things are very hard to find without a lot of driving around and wasting vast amounts of time. Like you said, sometimes we just need the eggs. But I feel good about doing most of my shopping locally, by bicycle.
Good for you! Today I had to get some keys made, and it was nice to have to go to a real store! But it's a great Ace Hardware on MLK that's closing, because the brother & sister owners are retiring after 20 years. That will be a big loss to the neighborhood.
Google search is a good example of enshittification (I like that term). Once something useful, such as ranked listings after a search, happens, people find ways to monetize/abuse it. That's the whole field of "search engine optimization." I kinda understood what that meant, but then I worked in marketing and dealt with it directly. It's the reason why recipes have three pages of text before you get a recipe. Headings, text, wording, links, images, everything on a page is geared towards a higher search ranking, not towards readability or information.
For sure! By the way, when my comms consulting clients ask me about SEO, I'll do some of the things — but I always tell them that the best SEO practice is providing quality content. Everything else is a hack, and the algorithms may change over time anyway. Thanks for reading and weighing in, Patrick! I hope you are well.
