Seeing how badly his 90s have been for my father, it's been a stark reminder of how the body can break down dramatically at a certain age, even if you've always been active and health-conscious. Most people (especially men) don't even live until their 90s though, so there's that.
That is so true, and we've both had those stark reminders with our parents. At the same time, all we hear out there is the reminders of how bad aging can be, but as a culture, we don't celebrate the good parts of it. And of course, I'm experiencing the 60s at this point, not the 90s.
Yes, there are also the good parts of it, and I find there’s more of a sense of being interested in the world, excited about how much there is to learn, and appreciating the time we have.
Rosana, thank you for another great post. I am so glad to see a dramatic shift in how people--although now that I think about it, mostly women--are reevaluating what it means to age. I'm thinking of it as # of spins around this planet.
Thank you, Celeste! Yes, it seems to be women talking about this. I'm glad there is a shift, even if it's just among us, but I wonder why more men aren't speaking up.
Ahh, another occasion to quote Mr. Dylan. This is from "Highlands," one of his best. It captures a sentiment about aging that feels more true by the day.
Some things in life, it gets too late to learn
Well, I'm lost somewhere
I must have made a few bad turns.
I see people in the park forgetting their troubles and woes
They're drinking and dancing, wearing bright colored clothes
All the young men with their young women looking so good
I recently treated myself to a facial. The menu of options included a "pro-aging facial." Pro, not anti!!
This one little thing made me so happy!
That's great!!

Well, I'd trade places with any of 'em
In a minute, if I could
Old people can dance and wear bright-colored clothes, too!!
As Bernie Sanders might wheeze, "I don't know about that!"
🤣
