This week we learned that an old college acquaintance of ours was killed in a car crash in Rhode Island. Her husband survived with broken bones, and their son was not with them at the time. An ordinary day turned into something anything but. It could have been otherwise, but wasn’t.
Your pieces are always a delight. I love your gentle humor, self-awareness, and apt observations.
My parents each died at an age 11 years older than my current age. I know it's common to fix on a parent's death age as "how much time I have left," though I try not to. My father did that. His father died suddenly at 63. Dad did not expect to have his "extra" 21 years. My younger brother died suddenly at 61. It could be otherwise. Savor the day (as in the lovely poem). Thank you.
Thank you so much, Kristi, that is very kind of you to say!
And I'm so sorry about your parents and your brother. That must have been so rough.
I too have known many cases of people thinking they'd only live as long as their parents, to then go on and far outlive them. We never know what will happen, and it's often not what we expect. Here's to many more years, and good years — that's the key!
"It is what it is, until it isn't." You can quote me on that!
Haha, thank you!

Oh Steve, I am so sorry. That is truly tragic, and it must be so hard for the husband and son. Thinking of you.

Excellent piece, RF. Thank you.
Thank YOU!
