Excellent post! I subscribe to a lot of RPG newsletters and when I saw the title I thought it was going to be about fleshing out interesting yet arcane details in fantasy cities!

OMG, I was a cheese merchant in a Zoom class just last week! Although, in my defense, I've been regretting it ever since.

Speaking of editing, the grapevine at a place where I used to work (ahem) tells me that the title of Editor has been changed to Content Success Specialist. They'll certainly use "CSS" as shorthand, introducing more potential ambiguity... Uh-oh, have some more cheese!

LOL — and OMG! I guess I'm glad I am no longer in the editing biz (though I always end up editing stuff at any job I have). That is horrifying. Thanks for reading and commenting, Cate! And you are not alone in slips into cheese merchantry. ;-)

I am called to sell cheese and other dairy products. It is my lot in life. Forgive.

Great piece. In addition to Life of Brian, this makes me think of the Python cheese shop sketch.

“Have you in fact got any cheese here at all?”

And I’m also reminded of a young woman in my discussion group in a college lit class who said that “Madame Bovary” was only worth it in French - the translated version was trash. Well, thanks. That’s a helpful perspective. Gah.

Right, how could I forget the cheese shop sketch! And yes, there are so many super-helpful cheese merchants. ;-)

It’s amazing what we remember, isn’t it? I mean, that discussion group was fully four decades ago. And it is fresh in my mind.
